Boat Winterizing Checklist: Plan Your Off-Season Prep

The last trip of the season deserves a little planning before the cover goes on. Use this six-step shopping guide from My Boating Supply to organize supplies for cleaning, engine preparation, water systems, battery care, covers, and storage. Your boat’s manuals, product labels, climate, and storage location should determine the actual work and sequence. This is a planning introduction, not a complete winterization procedure or a guarantee against freeze damage.

  1. Clean before you put the boat away

Make a list of the hull, deck, upholstery, and compartments that need attention. Choose cleaners suited to each surface, follow label precautions, and allow cleaned areas to dry before covering. Start with Winterizing Cleaning supplies.

  2. Plan engine and fuel-system preparation

Review your engine manufacturer’s storage procedure for oil service, cooling-system preparation, and any fuel treatment it specifies. Match service equipment to your installation rather than assuming one routine fits every engine. Browse Oil Change Systems for the oil-service portion of your plan; these systems are not fuel treatments or complete winterizing kits.

  3. Account for every water system

List the cooling circuits, freshwater plumbing, washdowns, and other water-containing equipment on board. Follow each system manufacturer’s draining and freeze-protection directions, including product compatibility and quantities. Explore Water Flushing Systems for applicable flushing tasks. Flushing equipment alone does not provide freeze protection.

  4. Set up battery care

Identify your battery chemistry and the maker’s storage and charging requirements before choosing a charger or maintenance setup. Confirm compatibility, installation conditions, and inspection needs, especially if the boat will remain powered during storage. Compare Battery Management equipment.

  5. Choose and fit winter covers

Check boat dimensions, cover fit, support requirements, and the cover manufacturer’s securing and ventilation guidance. Plan for access so you can inspect the boat through the off-season. Shop Winter Covers for your storage setup.

  6. Prepare the storage environment

Decide how you will monitor moisture and conditions, whether storing afloat or ashore. Review Heaters/Dehumidifiers for suitable moisture-management applications and De-icers where relevant to an afloat storage plan. Confirm intended use, power supply, installation restrictions, and marina requirements before selecting equipment. Do not rely on a heater, dehumidifier, or de-icer as a substitute for prescribed winterization.

Before ordering, check individual product pages for sizing, connections, kit contents, and consumables. Keep a record of completed work and planned inspections, and ask a qualified marine technician about any unfamiliar engine, plumbing, or electrical procedure.
