Sailing Hardware & Equipment Selection Guide

Choose sailing equipment around the job it performs and the boat's existing rig. Blocks, winches, rope, and attachment hardware must work together; a matching size name or brand is not enough to establish compatibility.

Match blocks to the line and loading

Compare rope diameter, sheave size, bearing type, attachment, and the manufacturer's working-load limits for the intended lead angle and purchase arrangement. Breaking strength is not a working-load allowance.

Those dimensions are starting points, not confirmation that either block suits a particular mainsheet, halyard, or control system. Check the complete assembly's ratings and installation instructions.

Choose winches and handles separately

The ANDERSEN 10 Classic winch RA500010 is a single-speed, non-self-tailing model. Check required trimming loads, line compatibility, deck thickness, mounting pattern, backing, and clearance before selecting a replacement.

A handle is not a winch. The Harken Grip&Go aluminum winch handle has a locking mechanism and a listed 10-inch length. Verify socket compatibility, operating clearance, and intended use with your exact winch. Do not assume every handle suits every load or speed configuration.

Check tracks, fittings, and rigging as a system

For traveler cars, end stops, shackles, rings, pins, and rigging components, match the exact track profile or attachment interface as well as dimensions, load direction, material, and manufacturer ratings. An end stop or eye is not a complete traveler assembly. Have a qualified rigger assess load-bearing changes when suitability is uncertain.

Fit apparel to the wearer and task

Measure rather than relying on a familiar size label. For example, the Mustang Traction UV open-finger gloves in Large list a 7.75-inch hand length and 9.25-inch hand circumference. Compare the manufacturer's sizing guidance and consider finger coverage, grip, and dexterity for the intended task.

Confirm what comes in the box

Separate complete equipment from replacement parts, mounting accessories, and service items. Check whether fasteners, handles, track, backing hardware, rope, or adapters are included before ordering. Use current product pages for availability and detailed specifications, and follow the boat and equipment manufacturers' instructions.
